Flakes on a Plane.

Wonder what was behind this mad and cheap publicity stunt, especially when his country is struggling with its worst food crisis. Tung Desem Waringin, an Indonesian motivational speaker, dumped approximately $10,000 over Serang city to promote his new book “Marketing Revolution.”

His Myspace page (it is actually his official page!), constantly plays R Kelly’s The World’s Greatest song in the background and persuades everyone to buy his book or attend his seminar to get rich quickly. Should financial wealth be the only aim in life?

I still do not understand what was he trying to gain from this publicity? Will he sell enough books to recoup that money? Or is he playing a long game and this cheap stunt is to boost his career as a motivational speaker? His publicity stunt seems to have got people around the world talking about it.

Maybe it is just fame and the buzz. Sometimes fame is far more intoxicating than money, especially to someone who seems to like to be on stage as a sensation-seeker.

The Book Helpdesk

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

This is hilarious and focuses on well known helpdesk issue. I love the bit where he compares the book to a scorll. Who knows, maybe people were apprehensive about books when they were first introduced.

The video was produced by the Norweigian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and an official version was uploaded by them on to the Youtube when it topped the most viewed chart. The video is in Norwegian with English subtitles.

A Smiling Fish

Monday, December 10th, 2007

All right I will soon write some proper posts than loading the blog up with youtube videos and cartoons all the time. I came across Smiling Fish a while ago and have been planning to mention it in the blog.

“Smiling Fish” based on Jimmy Liao’s story won the best short film at the Berlin Film Festival. The jury praised it to be a simple and beautiful film (It is!!!). It is a story of a lonely middle-aged man who buys a fish that ’smiles’ at him. He takes the fish home and hopes to have the fish as a companion but learns to “let go” the fish.

I have been a great fan of Jimmy Liao’s work. His books have a strong message under the simple sentences and childlike characters. This, I believe, reflects Jimmy’s personal experiences. Feelings of intense loneliness, loss and sadness are expressed in the depiction of characters. On the surface, Smiling Fish is about a man who has bought a fish but in truth, it is about an individual trapped and feeling helpless in life. But, Jimmy always expresses a message of hope in the end. Enjoy.
